OEM Mazda Drive Shafts
Mazda Drive Shafts Buying Guide
What They Do
Turn torque and rotary energy from the engine in your car or SUV into the motion that gets its many different parts going.
How Many and What Types There are
Four -- front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), four-wheel drive (4WD), and all-wheel drive (AWD).
How FWD Works
Front-wheel-drive systems use the vehicle's front wheels to move it. All parts are installed in front. Constant velocity joints (CV joints) connect to the differential and help run everything.
How RWD Works
Rear-wheel-drive systems use the rear wheels for motive power. The drive shaft connects to both the differential and the transmission. Instead of CV joints, they use universal joints (U-joints).
How 4WD and AWD Work
Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive systems use two drive shafts, with the one up front using U-joints to connect to both the front differential and the transfer case. In these systems, every wheel helps move your vehicle.
The Signs of a Bad Drive Shaft
These depend on the condition of the individual parts -- the U-joints, coupler, carrier bearings, and CV joints. If you experience trouble turning, the undercarriage vibrates, or you hear loud clunks when shifting, you may have a worn or failing U-joint or coupler or bad carrier bearings. If you hear clicks or knocks, however, you may have a worn or failing CV joint. A loose U-joint, on the other hand, may appear as shuddering when you speed up.
In any case, further damage to the drive shaft almost invariably follows. Need a new one? Be sure to buy the genuine article.
Why You Should Buy a Genuine Mazda Drive Shaft
It'll come from your brand perfectly fitting your model. You may not get the same fit-and-finish assurance from an aftermarket drive shaft.
